Fresh Organic Food at Your Fingertips
It is difficult to believe what you read about health foods. Just have a look at the health food section of your supermarket. It is full of highly processed, over-sweetened food masquarading as 'healthy'. We have been duped time and time again by food manufacturers claiming health benefits of their products. But one thing we can be certain of when it comes to healthy eating is that we should be eating more fresh organic plant foods. According to bestselling author Michael Pollan (Food Rules and In Defense Of Food) "If it's a plant, eat it. If it was made in a plant, don't." The key to healthy eating is "Eat food. Not too much. Mostly plants." Real food, he explains, is anything your great grandparents would recognise as food.
How to eat healthy can be a complex consideration, especially if you are sourcing your fresh foods from one of the big supermarket chains. It’s great to see organic food sections popping up in supermarkets everywhere. But it's unfortunate that every fresh organic item on Woolworths shelves is wrapped in plastic, often double-wrapped, making it impossible to gauge the freshness.
But there is hope for real food. Everywhere you look, there is a growing awareness and desire for wholesome, nourishing foods. Farmers Markets are popping up everywhere, gaining momentum against the corporate food giants, and have become even more fashionable, fun and informative places to shop. People are going out of their way to support local, sustainable and ethical producers, retailers and even chefs! Most people love to know where their food comes from. Whole neighbourhoods are ripping up their lawns, growing and sharing food together. And thankfully, depending on where you live, fresh organic food is becoming more and more accessible and affordable.
Even if you don't have an abundance of fresh organic food to choose from in your area, growing sprouts and microgeens on your kitchen bench is a great way to add nutrients to your plate in an economical and easy way.
Markets are a great place to connect with community
Did you know....
Sprouts and microgreens supply quality nutrients that our bodies assimilate easily, and by weight, are the richest source of vitamins, minerals and anti-oxidants of all fresh food.
Sprouts and microgreens have an abundance of phytonutrients and living enzymes, which research shows slows down the ageing process
Sprouts are fast, easy to grow and very economical.
Sprouts help to alkalise the body, eliminate toxins from the system and enable the body to heal itself and build a stronger immune system.
The fibre in sprouts lowers LDL cholesterol and lowers high blood pressure
Quick healthy lunches are easy with microgreens and sprouts.
Sprouting, or ‘activating’ seeds by simply soaking them overnight eliminates anti-nutrients that prevent the uptake of some of the seeds nutrients, and that after several days of sprouting, the protein, vitamins, and enzymes increase dramatically, some over 2000%!
